It was just a 30 second race, but it was a victory 50 years in the making, and one for “the normal people”.
Frank Hurst and his wife Tracey have become instant millionaires after their greyhound Good Odds Harada took out the TAB Million Dollar Chase - the world’s richest greyhound race - at Wentworth Park on Friday night.
Owned by Tracey and trained by Frank, Good Odds Harada led on box rise, led around the first turn, and as someone once said: “Frank’s dogs don’t get run down when they lead.” This was no exception.
In front of one of the largest crowds seen at the Glebe venue in many years, Good Odds Harada produced a stunning 29.34s performance, and for that a $1 million prize. Second, 2 lengths away was the gallant Shima Shine from the Victorian kennel of Andrea Dailly, with Jason Mackay’s Get It Gizmo a further 1¼ lengths away in third.
“This is the best night ever,” said Tracey admitting it wasn’t even close to sinking in that they had just become millionaires. “We didn't say what we would do if we won. We've been down that road before and haven't [won].
“We just tried to keep it normal all week, and of course it's always in the back of your mind.
“This doesn't happen to normal people.
"People have to understand this is not a one-week thing. This has been 50 years of my husband's life work. He deserves it, he really does.
"He's a genius. The man is an absolute genius. He's a great man and a great husband, a great father ... but he's even a better dog trainer. He's like a dog whisperer.”
While Frank boxed the dog, Tracey was in the catching pen waiting for Good Odds Harada to arrive.
“I saw that he jumped and led and they had to catch him after that. I just screamed. Someone said it's the best ride they've ever seen, so I must have been cheering pretty loud."
Just like his wife, Frank conceded it was far from sinking in.
“This is the biggest thing that’s ever happened in our life,” Frank said. “That’s what it’s all about. That’s what I keep working for.
“What’s this mean to me? Look, I’m just happy because it justifies what I put my life into. It’s a great feeling. I haven’t even seen Tracey yet.”
Asked if he felt confident in the run, Frank said: “I was reasonably happy, but then going through the pen he normally explodes in his second section. It took him a while to drop them dogs. They were good dogs chasing him. The one (Get It Gizmo) is probably one of the strongest dogs in NSW and Australia.”
